Article Marketing, Backlinks and Traffic – Ezine Articles the Place to Publish?

For backlinks and traffic, Ezine Articles is the premier place to publish on the web. Or is it? As a writer who’s a regular visitor to freelance job boards as well as running my own article marketing website, I’m very familiar with the standard request – “20 articles for Ezine please. Oh yes, they all need to be about Mortgage Deals and make them 400 words each – here are the keywords.”
Many people who want to promote their websites and blogs rely on Ezine for traffic and backlinks, by writing short “teaser” articles, with two links at the end pointing to their own website, but how effective is publishing at Ezine for article marketing purposes?
There was a time when nearly every search in Google threw up a first page result from Ezine Articles, but unfortunately this is no longer the case. While Ezine’s PageRank is a steady 6 (previously it was 8), the articles published there seem to have been devalued in the eyes of the BIG G and really it’s no wonder. Although at Ezine the articles are reviewed by a human being, there is still plenty of crap to be found, which has devalued Ezine as a whole and reduced many of the benefits of publishing there.
Gone are the days of instantly getting a high SERP for your Ezine article – it’s just not happening now. This of course affects the traffic levels that come through to your website or blog. So while you’ll still get your backlinks and some traffic (at least for the first month or so anyway) from publishing on Ezine Articles, it’s no where near as good as it used to be.
If you’re thinking about article marketing to promote your website then why not consider mixing it up a bit? What do you think Google thinks about your 20, 50 or 100 links from Ezine? There are plenty of other good article publishing websites such as HubPages, Bukisa, Squidoo, Docstoc and eHow, and using a mix of publishing venues may well be the superior option. As a bonus you can also benefit from adsense revenue sharing on some of these sites as well, so you can benefit at either end.
